Omaha Strategy Tips
Is there any strategy that can guarantee you victory in the game of Omaha Hold'em? Of course there is. These types of strategies usually include hiding cards in places where only your significant other can find them and the occasional savage beating if you happen to be caught engaging in this sort of "creative strategic play". Other ways of tipping things in your balance involve learning playing techniques that make you more competitive, and result in a bigger bankroll. Some basic tips are listed below.
1. Limit the number of hands you play
Sometimes less is more. There is no rule that says you must play the cards once they are dealt. If you look at your starting hand, and don't see a hand that can compete, let alone win, without a lot of help and luck, fold your cards and wait till the next hand. If you watch some of the best players in the world, and chart how many hands they actually play, you will find that they typically play between only 20-30% of their starting hands. Play your higher value starting hands and just ignore the hands that are losers from the get-go.
2. Learn to Fold. Do not become an ATM machine for your opponents. If after the flop, the cards have not gone your way, don't hang on waiting for an act of God to save your hand. Just fold. A number of newbies keep betting regardless of what is going on around them. Read the actions of your opponents and gauge your strength based on that. If there is a pair of Queens on the board, you're working on a straight, and one of your opponents is raising to the moon, it is a good bet they have one or two matching Queens in their hand or have already gotten their straight. This is where you put your cards down and stop the bleeding.
3. Swim with the fishes. Poker is not a game of pride and ego. If you want to compete in something that exercises your esteem, go into bodybuilding or competitive eating. The name of the game in poker is money. If you want to win money you do not do it playing "the best". You win money picking on inferior players. Play at betting limits where you can beat the majority of players. Move down in limits if you are having difficulties winning money. Be sure to leave your ego at the door. The poker table is the only place in the world where the right thing to do is take candy from babies.
4. Learn how to bluff. For most people lying comes as easily as breathing. This is a tendency that should be applied to your poker game. Just remember though, the most effective bluffs are done infrequently. Pick the ground you want to bluff on. Be sure to use your bluffs at the right times against the right players, and at the right frequency. The best professional players in the world only pull out the bluff on rare occasions. A bluff can be very effective when used sparingly, and when there is a seemingly low risk of your opponents calling you.
5. Understand player position. Poker should be played in three dimensions. It is not only about the cards in your hand, but also about where at the table you are sitting when you play them. The best position at the table is when you are sitting in the dealer position. This is because you are the last to act during a betting round. From that position you have the advantage of watching all of the betting action before you need to make a decision. You can also force action from this seat, such as raising, with no fear of somebody re-raising behind you. Be sure to learn the pros and cons of your position at the table, and apply press your advantages during a game.
This basic advice should help you improve your game and win more hands. Nothing is a substitute for experience though, so be sure to apply your lessons when playing online or at the casino.
